ARKANSAS RIVER EXPEDITION 2017
SPANNING FOUR STATES AND HUNDREDS OF MILES

JUST TACKLING THE ARKANSAS SOLO IS MIND-BOGGLING
Most of us know the Arkansas River, at least in passing as a large, national river somewhat dimly connected with the Mississippi river in some way. Where the Arkansas flows through the lower states of Oklahoma and Arkansas, it is a large and mighty river.
The Arkansas River as it is seen and known in Colorado and Kansas, is a ghost of its later glory. There are many sections along its length where for miles and even tens of miles, the current is weak and sluggish and the water rarely more than 2 to 6 inches deep. In fact, one section through western-central Kansas the Arkansas River barely even exists at all, is non-navigable, being little more than some isolated pools along a dry riverbed.
Navigating such a miniscule waterway requires more in the way of musculature and a vast experience in the hale art of lugging, toting, packing, hauling and pulling rather than kayaking.
For a man my age with less than perfect health and no expensive cargo-haulers, film-crew, back-up team or helicopter,..the task is daunting.
What I hope to do is to inspire some of the younger members of our population to look at this and say to themselves" If that old codger can do something that has never been done by someone his age,...what could I, with my youth, strength, skill, talents and enthusiasm accomplish"?
At this point in time there is no resource dedicated to assessing young people with unique outdoor aspirations. There are many educational resources & outlets, but few or none which could ascertain the viability of what would be necessary to becoming the first cyclist to completely navigate the ancient Incan highway for example.
I suppose, in a way, I am throwing down the gauntlet; I will not quit. I will not admit that I am beaten, unless I am truly, fairly and squarely beaten. I've been, burned, scratched, scarred, scraped, nearly drowned, almost frozen, bruised and battered, but I am not beaten. If this can be done at my age, I will do it.
I have never worked harder at anything in my life, I have never been so physically, psychologically and emotionally challenged by anything as I have by this project. But I would not have missed this nightmare for anything, because I had reached a point in my life where I had become tired, jaded, cynical; having lost my two oldest children...I had lost my joy.
Tackling this indifferent monster has revitalized my awareness, re-opened my eyes to the beauty and grandeur of our country, and re-awakened a love and respect not only for our wilderness areas, but to the magnificent people in this great land as well.
The gauntlet I throw down is this,...to the folks of my generation; please bring your knowledge, talents and diverse skills to bear in creating a group or organization in your community dedicated to assessing the unique outdoor visions of these extraordinary young people. To you, the strong, energetic young people of America; unplug, put down the game controller, let go of the mouse,..Get out there, Live your life, join a club, Start a club, join an organization, Start an organization, join or create a team, stand out, discover the real world and live your life, your outdoor life, your REAL life, while you have the chance, before someone else lives it for you.
Be aware that there exist many world-class challenges literally in your own backyard.
Do something amazing, push your boundaries and create who you truly can be.
CHALLENGE YOURSELF, CHALLENGE THE WORLD.

As a scientist I realized early on that I would never be able to make sense of the deaths of my son and daughter in any kind of rational way.  However, it occurred to me that as a father I could make sense of their lives. All chances to do anything for them were gone, but I could do something in their names. Both snatched away before they came into the full blossom of adulthood, what might they have achieved had this not occurred?
I felt that it had fallen to me to do what I could in their stead, so to speak.
My aim is to complete this mission in their names with the fervent hope that it may serve as a benchmark and an inspiration for the formation of a group or organization which could assess aspiring young people who have a unique outdoor vision and assist them in achieving their goals through the use of structured research and guidance.
I would envision this group, organization or foundation operating in a manner similar to a scholarship program.  It would have the criteria and means to assess extremely talented, gifted young people who have a truly extraordinary outdoor idea or vision and assist them in achieving that goal.  It would provide them with a goal-attainment program which would encompass whatever special training, guidance, certifications and perhaps partial funding or outfitting with gear or equipment to which they may otherwise have no access.
"THE BROADER HOPE IS TO INSPIRE THE CREATION OF A GROUP OR ORGANIZATION WHICH WOULD ASSIST YOUNG PEOPLE IN BRINGING EXTRAORDINARY OUTDOOR VISIONS TO LIFE"

TACKLING THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER
Many times throughout the course of completing the Arkansas River portion of the expedition, I was quickly, soundly and wetly reminded that every moment on the water required my full and undivided attention and all my accrued kayaking skills.
Upon completing the Arkansas River and beginning my trek down the Mississippi River, however, I was immediately forced to reconsider how to handle such a monster.
So began my foray into engineering a workable solution. The first iteration was a single outrigger on the starboard side. This worked remarkably well, but required such an enormous outlay of energy on that side I quickly realized a single outrigger was not the answer.
The second evolution was the true "Huck Finn" twin outrigger, composed entirely of deadfall and driftwood with rope-lashings scavenged from the shoreline.
The expedition continued for well over two-hundred miles in that form. However, driftwood eventually becomes waterlogged and only gets heavier, slower and less buoyant. Then comes the Vidalia version....
True twin outriggers using all sch 40 PVC construction and designed specifically to mount to the kayak with no modifications to the boat whatsoever, using a 4-point lashing system composed only and solely of ropes.
This however, was an unfinished version of the final iteration which is seen from Gramercy and onward, where the front and rear spars are mounted away from the boat with a true "suspension"-system, again, engineered specifically for this tiny boat. Â
The expedition has continued in this form to the current time.
For those kayaking purists who wish to cry foul, please do so,... after you've bested these rivers in true purist form.
For those among you interested in what and how the expedition-rig is built, what the particulars are and minutea of the engineering details, I've tried to provide a quick photo-reference. Check the site often as further updates and additions are forthcoming.

WHATS, WHAT?

NEW ORLEANS TO VENICE, LOUISIANA

Disclaimer
The word "Expedition" was perhaps poorly chosen, but at the time I was having a bit of fun at my own expense as the traditional use of the term implies a group of people.  There's only me and the two dogs on the river.  The term "solo" or "alone" refers specifically to the fact that there is no in-field/on-site personnel or support staff.  There actually are an ever-growing group of people who function in the background.  There are some great and wonderful people behind me, in front of me and those I've met along the way who have provided payments, advice, private and public donations and sponsorships as well as consulting and providing access to materials, equipment and supplies which have been crucial.  My utmost and sincere gratitude is extended to all those folks who believe in what I'm doing and have made and continue to make this true American odyssey a reality.
